Sustainability at Element Six

What does it mean for us?

At Element Six we believe it is our duty to do our part to preserve an earth worth living on and strive to create a greener future, through sustainable innovation, integrated policies and responsible culture.

Sustainable innovation. Integrated policies. Responsible culture.

We aim to think sustainably in all our work, from product innovation to operations and support services. We have teams across our global sites working to reduce energy intensity, replace fossil fuels and fossil electricity. Through our people and events, we look to improve our impact as a company, but also individually.

We are committed to:

  • Maximising energy efficiency and using renewable energies as much as possible
  • Recycling resources and avoiding waste as part of our certified environmental management systems
  • Fostering sustainable water management as much as possible
  • Striving to improve sustainability across the supply chain
  • Educating our colleagues, customers and suppliers and motivating them to act

Our emissions reduction roadmap

  1. Reduce energy intensity
  2. Replace fossil fuels
  3. Replace fossil electricity

The link between emissions and energy efficiency:
The implementation of ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems across our production sites is an important driver to reduce energy intensity. Our Irish site* was awarded ISO 50001 in 2021 and our German site** achieved the certification in 2023.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.

The Goals were adopted by UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Through the Anglo American Group, we are a member of the UN Global Compact that drives business awareness and action of the SDGs.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Our commitment to the SDGs

  • Reduce emissions at our operations as far as possible
  • Provide a detailed energy consumption data analysis
  • Review and implement the best approach to sustainable energy management
  • Identify focus areas and start working on priority projects
  • Manage five-year plans for each production site
  • Regularly review and improve E6’s approach to sustainability
Our commitment to the SDGs

Replacing fossil fuels to reduce our carbon footprint

Heat pump and variable refrigerant volume (VRV) projects were completed at our site in Shannon, Ireland.

Replacing the old heating system with VRV in the main office building significantly reduced the use of fossil fuel, while also lowering operational costs.

Using renewable electricity to drive emissions reduction

Solar panels have been fitted at our site in Springs, South Africa (1.5 MW solar panel installation in 2023, in addition to existing 1 MW unit fitted in 2021).

Thanks to this step towards sustainability, the site can now benefit from renewable electricity and emission savings.
